Some Info:
The Battlefield Community Team (CT) got a chance to chat it up with site administrator Caspar Jespersen to discuss the Battleracer mod for Battlefield 2.
Community Team: How did you come up with the concept of Battleracer?
Caspar Jespersen: Well, I have to be honest, it wasn't really my idea. A guy, called bloonz, created a post at the BFGeeks forum where he asked people, if it would be nice with a racing map - People got excited by the idea and I volunteered to help him. After some days he found out that he didn't have the time to create that project as the map should be perfect. Then I got the leadership, and I got a couple of guys together where we found out that; if this project should be successful then we needed to make a mod.
CT: What was some of the initial feedback you got once the mod was released?
CJ: When we release version 1.0 it was only in the Danish community. People said it was cool and stuff like that, but it really wasn't. People lost their interest after a week or so. We then released a new patch and the same thing happened where it was popular for about a week and then gone again. Then we got in touch with Mach10 and Sir. Elxx and they have really helped!
Mach10 has created the python and Sir. Elxx has really lifted Battleracer from bottom to top. I can't say "thank you" enough times to Sir. Elxx.
He modified the python, made some maps, and adjusted the afterburner. He did almost all the stuff that made the mod unique! And now when I ask some people if they want to try the mod they often answer like "No, I tried the first version and it didn't interest me".
But when I've begged them a little bit and they've tried it, they really get surprised about how good it is now.
CT: Tell us about some of the challenges you overcame in creating the Battleracer mod?
CJ: It's always a challenge to keep a mod popular in the beginning. We didn't handle that challenge very well. When we released the mod internationally and got a functional web page and forum, we pretty much handled that challenge as best as possible. But EA released patches, it pretty much screwed up some of the things in Battleracer. Yet we've also handled those issues pretty well.
CT: Well that's definitely not our intent. So for those who have not yet tried this mod, what types of vehicles should players expect to use in Battleracer?
CJ: In Battleracer we only have one vehicle at the moment, the US buggy. It's boosted with afterburner, a minigun, and we've removed the 3rd position gunner so he can swap between Seat 2, where he can shoot people in front of him, and Seat 3 where he can repair the vehicle.
However, in our next patch, we'll release a new jeep. We've skinned the MEC jeep and tweaked it a little bit so you guys get the best performance in the race. You can now choose between US jeep (fast and good in cities) and the MEC jeep (a little bit slower but good in rough terrain) The new jeep will be made for our Kubra Dam track which also will be released in next patch.
CT: What types of "expansions" are you looking to do with Battleracer? Can we expect boats, motorcycles or airplanes in the future?
CJ: We're going to release 2 Booster Packs; "Aero racing" and "Boat racing"... no we're not. As it seems now, we're going to expand our car-racing furthermore and then go to aero racing or boat racing. And maybe motorcycles (sounds like a great idea) when we've done that. Let's see if the mod and the game are still popular when that time comes.
CT: Thanks for your time. Are there any plugs you'd like to make in closing?
CJ: No problem mate, I would like to thank all our fans, my clan, Elxx, and all of you guys who are reading this interview. I'd really like to thank everybody in the world for being so kind to me.
